Keeping Connections Secure: FCC Bans Import of Foreign-Made Routers to Protect Cyber and National Security

Mar 25, 2026

The U.S.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a ban on the import of new foreign-made consumer routers due to cybersecurity and national security risks.
This decision aims to protect Americans and the country's communication networks.
The ban applies to all consumer-grade routers from foreign countries unless they have received Conditional Approval from the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security.
Certain drone systems and software-defined radios have been approved for sale in the U.S.
The ban follows concerns of supply chain vulnerability, severe cybersecurity risks, and potential exploitation by threat actors.
China-linked adversaries have been observed using compromised routers to launch cyber attacks on critical infrastructure in the U.S.
The ban does not affect already purchased routers or approved models sold by retailers.
The FCC warns that unsecure routers can be used as launching pads for cyber attacks and pose significant risks to national security.
