SRA Warns Legal Sector: Safeguarding the Future with Responsible AI Use

18 August 2026

The Solicitors Regulation Authority in the UK has issued a warning to solicitors and law firms regarding the safe and responsible use of AI in the legal sector.
They highlighted concerns over AI-related hallucinations and data leaks, emphasizing the importance of human oversight, professional judgment, and a risk-based approach to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations.
The SRA has observed instances of AI hallucinations in legal work, confidential client information being entered into public AI tools, leading to poor outcomes for clients and damage to public trust.
They provided recommendations for the legal profession, including remaining accountable for AI output, implementing effective governance structures to manage AI risks, and ensuring genuine and relevant submissions to the court.
The Law Society of England and Wales also stressed the importance of using AI responsibly to serve the best interests of clients as technological innovation in the legal field continues to evolve rapidly.
