AI Revolutionizes ICS Attacks: Siemens S7 Series PLCs in the Crosshairs

The US government agencies have issued a warning that threat actors are now using AI to target Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers (PLCs), particularly in critical sectors like water and energy.
The use of AI marks an evolution in threat actor capabilities, with attackers leveraging legitimate scanning services to identify vulnerable PLCs and deploying AI-generated scripts to find exploits.
Once access is gained, AI assists with lateral movement and evasion of defenses.
Operators are urged to update security measures, hunt for indicators of compromise, conduct immediate inventory, apply critical patches, separate OT and IT networks, strengthen access controls, disable unused communication protocols, and contact Siemens for hardening recommendations.
The focus is on improving baseline security controls in ICS environments to prevent attackers from accessing critical systems.
