Warning: Microsoft's File History Backup Feature May Fail After September 2026 Updates

21 September 2026

Microsoft has warned users that the File History backup feature in Windows may stop working after installing the September 2026 security updates.
File History automatically saves copies of files for recovery, but affected users may see application crash events in Event Viewer.
Symptoms include backup drive messages and incorrect timestamps.
Affected versions include Windows 10 21H2 or later, Windows 11 23H2 and later.
Microsoft released emergency updates for other issues caused by the September updates, but audio problems remain unresolved.
Additionally, a bug prevents some Windows 11 users from logging in with domain credentials after the updates.
