EOODMicrosoft Enables Default Windows Settings Backup, Ensuring Data Protection for Enterprise Systems
01 October 2026Microsoft has announced that Windows settings backup and restore is now enabled by default on all Microsoft Entra-joined or Microsoft Entra hybrid-joined enterprise systems upgraded to Windows 11 26H2.
The tool, formerly known as Windows Backup for Organizations, backs up and restores enterprise users' Windows settings after a device is reset, replaced, upgraded, or reimaged.
This feature was unveiled two years ago and recently became generally available.
The default-on behavior applies to eligible devices and ensures users' settings and app lists are backed up in case of recovery.
The tool's restore behavior will not be enabled by default, requiring explicit admin configuration.
Admins retain control through MDM solutions and can disable the backup policy if needed.
