EOODDecline in Cybersecurity Job Postings in the US Signals Changing Landscape: CyberSN Analysis
19 October 2026A recent analysis by CyberSN revealed a significant drop of 26.4% in cybersecurity job postings in the US from January to September 2026.
This marks the lowest number of job postings in four years, with a total of 235,786 cybersecurity roles advertised.
Leadership roles, including CISO, cybersecurity director, lead, and manager, experienced substantial declines.
Nine out of ten cybersecurity functions saw fewer postings in 2026 compared to 2025, with research roles being the only exception, showing growth.
The researchers are unsure if this decline reflects decreased employer demand or a return from a strong year in 2025.
The distribution of postings in 2025 was primarily from small businesses (39.9%), followed by large firms (47.3%) and those with 201 to 1000 employees (12.7%).
AI security engineer roles saw a significant increase of 268.3% in 2026, while job postings mentioning AI or machine learning remained similar to 2025.
Additionally, there was a surge in cyber data scientist postings in September 2026, with 88% of roles mentioning AI in the job description.
