Here below are some notes on web design.

  • 01 - First things first! Design site structure before deigning pages!
  • 02 - Beware of the webmaster who has been in this job for the last twenty (20!) minutes only
  • 03 - Designing a good site is quite difficult (no, your cousin can't do it!)
  • 04 - Beware of those webmasters who say they do everythin: HTML/CSS, Javascript, PHP, MySQL, server management, networking, copy, graphics, usability, user experience, SEO, social promotion, security and legal.
    You need a good team for a good site!
  • 05 - Why do graphic designers claim to be webmasters? Can't they keep making the graphic design?
  • 06 - Always ask a question: who is responsible for the usability of the site? Some webmasters won't even be able to answer you!
  • 07 - Use a screwdriver to turn a screw and a hammer for a nail. Never use a screwdriver for a nail or a hammer for a screw.
  • 08 - If you are publishing a blog use WordPress. If you are publishing a company site DO NOT use WordPress. if you run a forum use PHPBB or SMF.
  • 09 - Colors are important: our brains react unconsciously to color. Choose the right color for your audience: if you sell milk use white as background! Readability is a must.
  • 10 - Never write in red or blue over black. Never write in yellow over white. Choose the right color combination for your pages.
  • 11 - Always use only the technologies you need: what is the point of uploading a CSS of 1 Mbyte (!), JQuery, and 20 CSS / Javascript for the simple page of a small website?
  • 12 - Special effects, animations, interstitials: there are the clowns for these!
  • 13 - Interstitials: did your webmaster suggest using them? Make her/him run!
  • 14 - Please, remember: SEO comes before the site: you have to design the site and its structure according to the SEO guidelines. Without search engines, your (beautiful) site will be seen by none.
  • 15 - Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress is just child's play. No serious results can be reached with it in SEO.
  • 16 - If your SEO consultant (you need one, definitely) promises you results in less than 3 months... you have a problem.
  • 17 - If the social media manager is focused on TikTok and your audience is adult... you need a new social media manager.
  • 18 - If your social media manager is suggesting a social media only campaign, please, ask him who is the owner of a social media account.
  • 19 - Anyone suggesting a change in graphic design to get better results is a proovy.
  • 20 - Use standard fonts. If someone is advocating the use of special fonts, she/he is not going to help you.
  • 21 - Mailing lists are dangerous for SEO: beware of promoters that use them.
  • 22 - Every site has some important accessories: there must be some legal pages (cookies, privacy, terms of use): if your wannabee webmaster does not know how to do these ... he/she is on the wrong job.
  • 23 - NB: in which languages should the pages be written?
  • 24 - The site must work well even on smartphones, ça va sans dire!
  • 25 - Technical aspects of professional site development (not an amateur site) are important: if your webmaster is not technically qualified ... please, change webmasters!
  • 26 - Pages must be loaded (in ideal conditions) in LESS than 1 (one) second and must be displayed correctly in all browsers (OK, reasonably recent) and in all resolutions!
  • 27 - The networking of your site is very important! If your webmaster stares at you when you ask about networking... please, change webmasters!
  • 28 - Email configuration is important: your webmaster must know how to manage it (if he tells you that there is no problem, he simply can't manage it).
  • 29 - Internet security? Unknown to most!
  • 30 - Test your pages for speed, size and security; always validate every page's HTML/CSS; check Javascript errors; check headers for security.
